CLEANLINESS OF COMPONENTS

  1. Scope

This specification applies to components of high speed engines within the scope of quality assurance. A limit for the max. permissible contamination of the components in a condition as delivered as well as a test method will be defined.

  2. Limit for max. permissible contamination

    • In the spirit of this Specification a component shall be deemed „clean“ if its surface is not contaminated more than would correspond to the of 106th part of the component weight (1 ppm=1 mg/kg).

    • According to their function mostly those surface sections are concerned to which during engine operation oil, fuel, cooling water and intake air are admitted. For reasons of clearness all surface sections shall be included, however, in accordance with this Specification, i.e. even those which are external surfaces during engine operation. External surfaces may only be excluded upon special agreement.

    • It may be necessary that special-function surfaces must evidence a deviating degree of cleanliness than permissible according to this Specification. Such requirements shall be defined on the drawing for the specific component(s).

    • There is a standard comment text available for drawing entries, see section 4.

  3. Test method

Deviations to this method are to be agreed with DEUTZ AG quality assurance.

      • Filter type

Filter membrane (polyester filter) 5 µm mesh width / 47 mm diameter, optionally 25 mm diameter with fuel components (standard filter).

Filter membrane (polyester filter) 100 µm mesh width / 47 mm diameter with cylinder chamber crankcase, cylinder head and gear case.

      • Filter preparation

Pre-condition the filter membrane for min. 15 minutes at max. +110 °C, then allow to cool down. Determination of the weight of every filter membrane with an accuracy of min. 0.2 mg.

      • Blank value determination

For determination the blank value of the analysis equipment (tank, breaker, filtration unit, analysis system), the amount of rinsing liquid must correspond to the blank value determination of the component test’s rinsing liquid amount. The blank value may exhibit max. 10% of the allowable gravimetry (protective mass), and the max. particle size in the blank value may correspond to a max. of half of the allowable particle size.

Example: Requirements on the component, gravimetry 5 mg / max. particle size 800 µm, then the blank value may exhi- bit max. 0.5 mg and 400 µm particle size.

      • Component rinsing

        Components are to be

        1. Intensiveliy rinsed with a pressurised test liquid, e.g. petroleum, isopropanol, deionised water, etc.

        2. Oil bores and narrow channels are to be systematically rinsed out

        3. the component is to be drained for min. 3 minutes

        4. The drained test liquid is to be collected and then filtered

      • Filter evaluation

The clogged filter menbrane is to be dried at +110 °C for 45 minutes and then cooled down to ambient temperature. The clogged filter is to be weighed. The difference between the new (subsection 3.2) and clogged filter gives the gravimetry (protective mass).

    Example: New filter 120.3 mg

    Clogged filter 126.8 mg = gravimetry 126.8 mg – 120.3 mg = 6.5 mg

Noticeable forweign bodies are to be analysed with regard to their type (e.g. steel, silicates, metal chips, glass beads) and size.

The results are to be documented in the form of a report and are also a part of the first sample test.
