Investment casting or lost wax is a metal forming process that typically uses a wax pattern surrounded by a ceramic shell to make a ceramic mold.

When the shell dries, the wax is melted away, leaving only the mold. Then the casting component is formed by pouring molten metal into the ceramic mold. The lost wax casting process is suitable for repeatable production of net shape components from a variety of different metals and high performance alloys.

Stainless steel is the most welcomed material to make lost wax casting. Compared to other casting processes such as die casting or sand casting, it can be an expensive process. However, the components that can be produced using investment casting can incorporate intricate contours, and in most cases the components are cast near net shape, so require little or no rework once cast.

General manufacturing process of OEM lost wax casting:
 
1. Making the investment pattern
    – Firstly, design and manufacture the mold according to the shape and size of the part.
    – Then, inject the pasty fusible materials such as wax or plastic into the mold to form the precise investment pattern.
 
2. Coating with refractory materials
    – Immerse the fabricated investment pattern in a special coating to evenly cover the surface of the pattern with a layer of refractory materials.
    – Usually, multiple coatings are required and drying is carried out to increase the thickness and strength of the coating.
 
3. Sand sprinkling
    – After coating with refractory materials, sprinkle fine sand onto the surface of the investment pattern to enhance the strength and permeability of the shell mold.
 
4. Drying and hardening of the shell mold
    – Place the coated and sanded shell mold in an appropriate environment for drying and hardening.
 
5. Dewaxing
    – Put the shell mold in a heating device to melt and flow out the investment pattern material, forming a hollow shell mold.
6. Shell mold baking
    – Bake the dewaxed shell mold at high temperature to remove the remaining wax and moisture and improve the strength and permeability of the shell mold.
 
7. Melting and pouring
    – Melt the corresponding metal material according to the material requirements of the part.
    – Pour the molten metal liquid into the baked shell mold.
 
8. Cleaning and post-treatment
    – After the casting cools and solidifies, remove the shell mold.
    – Perform post-treatment processes such as cleaning, cutting, and grinding on the casting to obtain the final finished part.
